Silverstone Auctions ‘marches’ forward with Sytner collection
Three Frank Sytner owned single-seater race cars from the 1970’s representing Formula’s One, Two and Three, which have recently returned from the prestigious Historic Grand Prix of Monaco event, are to be auctioned at the Silverstone Classic Sale on 21st July.
Leading the pack is a 1972 Formula One March 721G, estimated at between £240,000 to £280,000. Hot on its heels is a 1978 Formula Two March BMW 782, estimated at between £95,000 to £105,000 and a 1978 Formula Three March 783, estimated at between £45,000 to £55,000.
The stunning trio join an eclectic mix of race and competition cars, more than 40 classic road going models, motorbikes and automobilia at the sale on 21st July as part of the Silverstone Classic weekend, the world’s biggest classic motor racing festival.

While Frank built an incredibly successful car dealer network, to many, “Fearless Frank” is a motorsport icon. In the 1970’s he raced in Formula Ford and Clubmans, progressing to saloons in the 1980’s and winning the British Touring Car Championship in 1988. He has driven a multitude of cars over the years and more recently has turned his hand to historic racing.
The Formula One model from his collection has recently undergone a full painstaking restoration, with the Cosworth DFV engine rebuilt by Johann Birgersson, restoring the car to its original specification. As the only original version of the car in the world, it is most definitely the car to have in Pre-73 Historic Formula One.
In period it was driven among others by Mike Beuttler and enjoyed a series of competitive results, even out qualifying Niki Lauda and Ronnie Peterson on one occasion.
Meanwhile, the 1978 Formula Two car on offer retains its original tub and has a fresh BMW engine, making it very desirable for entry in the pre-1979 historic Fomula Two racing series. Indeed, only recently it enjoyed a second place finish at Donington Park.
When it was driven in the 1970s it had such prolific racers as Jean Pierre Jarier, Jaques Lafitte and Harald Ertl behind the wheel.
Also from 1978 is a model which enjoyed much success in the day with driver Michael Korten, finishing runner up in the 1978 German Formula Three championship and overall winner in 1979.
The car has just had a complete rebuild and now represents an opportunity to compete at the best international historic F3 events in a reliable and competitive race car.
