    Olavi Huhtala, head of SSAB Europe, to retire next year

    Olavi Huhtala, Head of SSAB Europe, has announced that he will retire during winter 2025. A recruitment process to find his successor will now begin. Olavi Huhtala has been head of SSAB Europe and a member of SSAB’s Group Executive Committee since 2014. He has been employed by the company since 1987, starting at Rautaruukki which combined with SSAB in 2014.     Political strikes in Finland impact SSAB’s earnings

    The political strikes that started in Finland on March 11, 2024 are estimated to weaken SSAB Europe’s first quarter operating result by around SEK 350 million. If the strikes continue into the second quarter, they will weaken the operating result by an estimated SEK 125 million each week.The political strike is aimed against the Finnish government and is not related to SSAB’s labor relations.     Several trade unions have announced a two-week political strike in Finland starting March 11, 2024. If the strike materializes, it is estimated to weaken SSAB Europe’s operating result in Q1 by around SEK 300 million.The political strike is aimed against the Finnish government and is not related to SSAB’s labour relations.     SSAB Europe carries out repairs and brings forward maintenance work at blast furnace 2 in Raahe

    SSAB Europe will carry out repairs and maintenance work at one of the two blast furnaces at the Raahe site in Finland. This means that the operations at blast furnace 2 will be stopped for around 8 weeks and the total cost is estimated to be around SEK 200 million in the first quarter of 2019.The background is the minor break out in blast furnace 2 that occurred on January 22, when some molten iron leaked through the hearth wall from a hole.     SSAB Europe invests in the tube production and improves efficiency

    SSAB Europe will invest SEK 300 million over a 2-year period to improve efficiency of its tube production. In the same context, the tube business will be centralized to secure long-term competitiveness. The worker consultations initiated at the Lappohja Tube Mill have been completed and the mill will be closed by the end of 2020. However, SSAB Europe will offer all Lappohja employees jobs at its other locations in Finland.SSAB Europe aims to increase the sales volumes of premium products, which are more profitable than standard products.     Transformer fire at SSAB Hämeenlinna mill

    A transformer fire occurred at the SSAB Europe Hämeenlinna mill this afternoon and the mill was evacuated due to smoke. The fire has been extinguished. There were no injuries.According to a preliminary estimate, production will be down in the cold rolling section of the mill for a few days. Galvanized and color-coated products will soon be able to be produced at a normal speed, but cold rolling will run at a limited capacity initially.     SSAB Europe participates in a VTT project to improve competitiveness in the European steel industry

    SSAB Europe is one of the companies involved in the Morse project headed by VTT Technical Research Institute of Finland to improve processes in the European steel industry. The main focus is on developing new software tools which can be used to improve, manage and speed up production processes. This will improve products, business, competitiveness and cost and raw material efficiency in the industry.
