Bristol Airport is calling on local MPs to back a campaign calling for a Fair Tax on Flying. In a letter to politicians from across the West of England, Airport Chief Executive, Robert Sinclair, warned against further increasing Air Passenger Duty, which already makes UK passengers the most heavily taxed in Europe. Passenger numbers at Bristol Airport rose in 2010, with volumes up 1.8 per cent compared to 2009. Bristol was one of only two of the UK’s top 10 airports to grow in 2010. The number of people travelling through the South West’s busiest terminal increased despite the significant disruption to European air travel caused by snow, volcanic ash and air traffic control strikes. On-site car parks given Park Mark seal of approvalBristol Airport has retained Park Mark Safer Parking status following a review carried out as part of a scheme set up by the Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO). All seven on-site car parks once again met the requirements following a formal risk assessment process. The Park Mark Safer Parking scheme is aimed at reducing both crime and the fear of crime in parking facilities. FIRST WIND TURBINE BEGINS GENERATING POWER AT BRISTOL AIRPORT

A wind turbine has been successfully installed at Bristol Airport. The vertical axis turbine is part of a pilot project to trial the use of renewable energy on the Airport site, and it began harnessing wind power earlier this month. The Quiet Revolution qr5 is located on the approach road to the terminal building. At 20 metres in height, the wind turbine is shorter than lighting masts already in place across the airfield, ensuring it does not interfere with radar and airport safety systems. Plans for an on-site hotel at Bristol Airport were approved this evening (13 October) at a meeting of North Somerset Council’s South Area Committee. Work on the 251 room facility could now start as early as next year, with completion targeted for winter 2012/13. Bristol Airport is currently the ninth largest airport in the UK measured by passenger numbers, but is the only one of the top 15 airports in the country without on-site hotel accommodation. Passenger numbers at Bristol Airport continued to rise in July, with volumes up 2.19 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year. Coloured wristbands help keep families together on holidayBristol Airport has teamed up with Avon and Somerset Police to launch an initiative to keep kids safe on holiday this summer. Brightly coloured wristbands will be handed out to children before they fly, with parents able to put their phone number on the back so they can be contacted should the child get lost.
