Gasum opens Kronoberg County’s first filling station for liquefied gas in Ljungby, Sweden
Gasum has today opened its 11th gas filling station in Sweden. The Ljungby station is the first station for liquefied gas in Kronoberg County and will serve heavy-duty vehicles (HDVs). It is part of Gasum’s plan to build a network of 50 gas filling stations for HDV’s by the early 2020s in the Nordics.
Gasum’s new Ljungby station offers liquefied natural gas (LNG) and liquefied biogas (LBG) for heavy duty vehicles. The station is located in a logistic hub area, which means that the area already has a large existing customer base.
As Ljungby lies at the intersection of roads E4 and R25, the station serves Gasum’s customers on both roads. The station is located next to E4, which passes along the Gulf of Bothnia from Haparanda on the Finnish border to Gävle and onwards across Sweden to Helsingborg across the sea from Denmark. National road R25 is also located close to the station. R25 is a link between the east and the west as it travels through Sweden between Kalmar and Halmstad.

As most of our customers have operations throughout Sweden, the Ljungby station is a welcomed addition to the gas filling station network for them as well. Interest towards gas as a fuel solution is steadily increasing and, thanks to governmental climate subsidy programs such as Klimatklivet, more than 800 gas trucks are now operating on Swedish roads. The new station furthers our objective to build a network of 50 gas filling stations in the Nordics by the beginning of the 2020s,” says Mikael Antonsson, Director of Traffic at Gasum in Sweden.
According to the new emission standards passed by the EU in 2019, greenhouse gas emissions from HDVs are to be reduced by 30% by 2030. The national target in Sweden is to reduce road transport emissions by 70% by 2030, as compared to 2010 levels. The need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions quickly makes liquefied gas a good solution as it is already available and meets the target requirements for reduced emissions.
Ljungby stretches Gasum’s network in southern Sweden to Kronoberg County
The Ljungby station is the latest addition to Gasum’s network in southern Sweden, where biogas production is already widely established. In February, Gasum opened a gas filling station in Kalmar which is located east of Ljungby. In an area 100 km south of Ljungby, Gasum is also building a biogas plant in conjunction with Stora Enso’s Nymölla pulp and paper mill in Kristianstad, where Gasum already has a filling station.
Småländska bränslen in Ljungby offer compressed gas to distribution and passenger vehicles on the site where Gasum has now built a filling station for liquefied gas for heavy duty vehicles.

As EU and national emission targets are being pursued, LBG and LNG are becoming highly attractive fuel choices. With the use of LBG, greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced by up to 90% compared to diesel. With LNG, greenhouse gas emissions are more than 20% lower than those of diesel. LNG and LBG can be used in the same infrastructure, making the shift from LNG to LBG easy and cost efficient.
