Winter concert to raise funds for local charities

Rugby School, Sunday 4 December 2016, 4.00pmTalented musical students from Rugby School will join forces with the Birmingham Conservatoire Symphonic Brass on Sunday 4 December, when the school hosts a special winter concert to raise funds for two local charities. Top award for York Community Furniture Store in re-use 'Oscars'

A York charity has been recognised for its outstanding work following the December floods, which saw many families forced to leave their homes with their furniture and possessions ruined by contaminated water.  York Community Furniture Store was named Reuse Organisation of the Year in the Furniture Reuse Network’s 2016 annual awards. Community Furniture Stores in York, Selby and Scarborough will be able to offer more free furniture to flood victims in York and North Yorkshire, as organisations around the country send extra supplies for those hit worst by the Christmas flooding. Chocolate-loving volunteers sought for BBC experiment

1 June 2015Chocolatiers across York are joining forces to find chocolate enthusiasts to participate in an experiment taking place in York on 1 June for the BBC TV show, ‘Trust Me, I’m a Doctor’. Naburn pupils stitch up highwayman

Twenty-five children from Naburn Primary School swopped pens and paper for needles and thread to turn the story of the luckless highwayman and the landlord’s daughter into a visual feast for the eyes during a workshop at The Quilt Museum in York. The Year 3 pupils (aged 7 to 8 years) studied Alfred Noyes’ classic poem The Highwayman and then worked out how they could use different fabrics and sewing techniques to make and illustrate the characters and key scenes. Pyper York appointed to promote the Apocalypse

York-based public relations and marketing agency, Pyper York Limited, has been appointed to develop a creative approach to the apocalypse, due to take place in February 2014. The appointment was made by York Archaeological Trust, organisers of the annual JORVIK Viking Festival in York.  The 2014 Festival – which will be the 30thannual winter festival hosted by the JORVIK Viking Centre - will be themed around Norse myths and legends, with the grand finale event taking place on 22 February 2014 recreating Ragnarok, which is the Viking apocalypse, when the gods fall and the world is reborn.

The sun shines on The Fallen, a massive sand art project on the beach of Arromanches, France, for Peace Day 2013

Today (Saturday 21 September 2013) saw the creation of The Fallen, a project undertaken by artists from Sand In Your Eye on the beach at Arromanches in France (one of the beaches which featured in the D-Day landings) to mark Peace Day.  Along with a host of volunteers, Jamie Wardley and Andy Moss hoped to rake the images of 9000 ‘fallen’ onto the beach – an artwork that would be washed away by the tide later on in the day.
