The food is one reason to take a cruise – the best from Viking Line’s menus to be served at MICHELIN Guide Ceremony
Viking Line will be in attendance as one of the Host City Supporting Partners when the MICHELIN Guide announces its new Stars and Special Awards for Nordic restaurants for the first time in Finland. For passengers, the food today is an increasingly important reason to take a cruise – one indicator of this is the growing popularity of the shipping company’s à la carte restaurants.
The 2023 MICHELIN Stars and MICHELIN Green Stars will be awarded to Nordic restaurants on June 12 – for the first time ever in Finland. Some 450 guests are expected to attend the ceremony at the Logomo venue in Turku, including representatives of the Nordic restaurants that currently hold MICHELIN Stars as well as many members of the international press.
Viking Line is one of the MICHELIN Guide Host City Supporting Partners for the event. There are 17 restaurants serving food on Viking Line’s vessels and a total of 417 kitchen staff members.
“We are proud to support and be part of the 2023 MICHELIN Guide Ceremony for the Nordic Countries. MICHELIN Guide distinctions and food tourism go together, and for more and more of our passengers our food is the main reason for taking a cruise. Our goal is to offer the best food on the Baltic Sea and to continuously raise the level of ambition in our kitchens. We have long worked in partnership with the Swedish National Culinary Team and have also been involved in and arranged the Chef of the Year contest,” says Viking Line’s restaurant manager, Janne Lindholm.
Viking Glory’s head cook, Hanna Suonpää, Viking Grace’s head cook, Petri Niilola, and M/S Cinderella’s head cook, Tuomas Tusberg, will serve guests the best dishes from Viking Line’s menus, which they have been involved in developing.
“A professionally skilled and engaged restaurant staff is the most important guarantee of quality for us. Without our talented employees, we would not be able to serve the best food on the Baltic Sea. It feels like a big honour to be able to present our knowledge and our food philosophy to guests at the Nordic MICHELIN Guide Ceremony. Our Åland roots are clearly reflected in the ingredients we have chosen and in the servings – just as they are reflected on our customers’ plates,” notes Janne Lindholm.
The City of Turku will host the MICHELIN Guide Ceremony in conjunction with Turku Food Weeks, which presents the food culture of Finland’s oldest city. Turku’s standing as a prominent food city and top destination for Nordic gastronomy has clearly become stronger in recent years. As for Viking Line, it is the only shipping company that connects Turku with another celebrated food city, Stockholm, twice a day, year-round.
“A culinary trip to Turku and then continuing from there on a cruise in the world’s most beautiful archipelago is an unbeatable combination for people who love good food. We want to offer the best in all of our restaurants, but our à la carte restaurants are now more popular than they have been in years. Many people today are prepared to pay for quality and want to have ever more exclusive offerings on their cruise. And it certainly feels luxurious sitting and enjoying asparagus from Åland as the beautiful views of the archipelago slip past.”
