Paulig and the University of Helsinki investigate food loss at the beginning of the food supply chain: Timing of harvest important for avoiding losses
Paulig, an international food and beverage company and the University of Helsinki’s Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science HELSUS collaboratively investigated, for the first time, the quantity of food loss generated at the beginning of the food supply chain. Factors relating particularly to harvesting and the processing of harvested crops were identified as causes of loss generated in primary production. In developing countries, challenges are also brought about by, among other things, inadequate storage opportunities, long transport distances and market fluctuations. Globally, roughly
