Gasum and IKEA Finland are stepping up their collaboration during 2019: Gasum will open a gas filling station in conjunction with the IKEA store in Raisio. In addition, the aim is to open stations at the Kuopio and Tampere stores later on this year. The gas filling stations already in operation in conjunction with IKEA stores in Lommila, Espoo, and Porttipuisto, Vantaa, have been very popular among consumers. Since their opening, the new stations have provided clean fuel to cover a distance of more than 4 million km driven and reduced CO2 emissions from transport by around 600 tonnes compared with gasoline.

In the future, consumers and businesses will be able to fuel their gas vehicles with environmentally friendly biogas in conjunction with the Raisio, Kuopio and Tampere IKEA stores. The objective of Gasum and IKEA Finland is to introduce new gas filling stations at the stores during 2019. The new gas filling stations are part of closer collaboration between Gasum and IKEA Finland where one of the aims is to expand access to low-emission road fuel gas.

”We want to support our customers in making more sustainable everyday choices. By utilizing the food waste generated at our restaurants we are able to offer our customers a responsible filling-up option at more and more IKEA stores. At the same time, while utilizing the minor amounts of food waste generated at IKEA restaurants, we will also continue to make efforts to reduce food wastage,” says Jessica Lehtinen, Sustainability Manager, IKEA Finland.

As part of collaboration between Gasum and IKEA Finland, food waste from IKEA stores is used as feedstock in biogas production. IKEA Finland also aims to gradually replace the vehicles used by personnel and the IKEA buses with vehicles running on biogas or another environmentally friendly fuel. This will promote low-emission transport solutions and the achievement of ambitious transport emission cut targets.

Great emission reductions thanks to gas filling stations

In 2018, two gas filling stations were opened in conjunction with IKEA stores in Finland: Lommila, Espoo, was the world’s first gas filling station introduced in conjunction with an IKEA store. After Espoo, a station was also opened at Porttipuisto, Vantaa.

In less than a year, the stations have become very popular among consumers and are some of the biggest-selling stations in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area in terms of volumes sold. Since their opening, the new stations have provided clean fuel to cover a distance more than 4 million km driven and reduced CO2 emissions from transport by around 600 tonnes compared with gasoline.

”We’re happy about our shared aim of introducing three new gas filling stations in conjunction with IKEA stores this year. The stations already opened in Espoo and Vantaa have been a great success and used actively by customers driving gas-fueled vehicles. The filling stations increase access to gas in new areas and further support the achievement of transport emission reduction targets,” says Markus Kaarlela, Development Manager, Traffic, Gasum.

Biogas is a 100% local and renewable transport fuel produced from biodegradable waste generated by homes, retail outlets and industry as well as from wastewater sludge and agricultural side streams. Using biogas to fuel road vehicles makes it possible to cut the greenhouse gas emissions generated over the fuel life cycle by up to 85% compared with fossil fuels.

The construction of the Raisio gas filling station begins during March and the station will be opened in June 2019. The aim is to also open filling stations in conjunction with the Kuopio and Tampere IKEA stores during the current year. The Kuopio and Tampere filling stations will also serve heavy-duty vehicles.
