    SSAB continues the transformation with a fossil-free mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden

    SSAB’s Board of Directors have today taken the decision to proceed with the next step in SSABs transition, building a state-of-the-art fossil-free mini-mill in Luleå, Sweden. When completed SSAB will close the current blast furnace-based production system. This will reduce Sweden’s CO\2\ emissions with 7% in addition to the 3% from the Oxelösund mill conversion. The new Luleå mill will have a capacity of 2.5 mton/year and consist of two electric arc furnaces, advanced secondary metallurgy, a direct strip rolling mill to produce SSABs specialty products, and a cold rolling complex

    The change negotiations initiated by SSAB Europe’s Finland Business Unit in Raahe have concluded. The negotiations identified solutions that can deliver permanent cost savings of more than EUR 10 million annually in fixed costs.     SSAB Europe’s Business Unit Finland is to initiate change negotiations in Raahe because of continued weak demand. The target is to structurally reduce the fixed costs by at least EUR 10 million on an annual basis.     Tibnor plans to adjust cost structure

    SSAB’s subsidiary Tibnor plans to adjust operations due to lower demand and profitability. The measures aim at annual costs savings of approximately SEK 150 million and cover all Tibnor business areas and countries with the exception of the Baltic countries.     SSAB started to explore flexibility measures related to staffing adjustments at the end of August and initiated employer-employee negotiations in its Finnish operations concerning potential temporary lay-offs of a maximum of 90 days. The negotiations have now ended and there will be a temporary lay-off need averaging 2-3 weeks in 2019. The temporary layoffs concern SSAB Europe, which has the largest sites in Raahe and Hämeenlinna, as well as Group functions. The exact allocation of layoffs will be determined over the coming weeks.     New software robots at SSAB enable employees to focus on more value-added tasks

    We have new non-human team members in SSAB. Software robots named “Ssabine” are now being used to perform several administrative tasks across the company. These “digital workers” are doing manual, repetitive tasks, which allows employees to focus on more value added tasks. Ssabine is what’s known as robotic process automation, or RPA.
