Power supplies, which used to be a mass of analog technologies, have been going through major changes since the turn of the century. Once controlled by switching devices on and oﬀ in an analog circuit based on output voltage monitoring, they are now controlled digitally by microprocessors and software. Cosel started to develop its own digital control technology at an early stage. By incorporating digital control technology into the analog circuitry, Cosel has achieved power supplies with higher-level functions from which the FETA3000BA is fully benefiting.
A good device has less than a millisecond pulse width, meaning that it is incredibly fast-firing, requiring the power supply to be able to deliver high energy levels during the pulse, but also able to restore energy for the next pulse. Time to market is very important for systems designers as is simplicity of the sourcing / supply chains in order to reduce downtime in the case of trains maintenance or hardware upgrades. Both are driving forces behind extra-wide input range converters and we see similar demands from other industries such industrial automotive. Designing 13:1 input range DC/DC converters is very challenging in order to optimize all parameters while keeping the highest possible efficiency levels across the whole input voltage range, and we are proud that our designers achieved this in the new MAD-MAE-MAF series.

From the early days, board mounted DC/DC converters simplified the design process, whilst shortening the time to market. Modern equipment embedded in trains require a specific power-up sequence (e.g. checking IGBT isolation, gate activation, security checks) which is done by a computer powered from an auxiliary battery. Due to some equipment or isolation breakers not always turned off, the auxiliary battery can discharge down to its safety level. Without proper LBVS, it is not possible to start the train, making this unit very important for safe operation.
